Poems and Stories Found While Walking in Woods
by Stephen Harrod Buhner

THE SHEATH

Was it your love that put this here
or the small secret part of you
that you hide in darkness?

Both smile enticingly,
hands spontaneously lifted
to touch my cheeks.

But I have noticed,
that that one's teeth
are slightly longer.

And she looks slyly
out of the corner of your eye
as she takes the sharpened words,

and slides them home
in the part of me
that love has made defenseless.
